The Mission Behind the World Food Prize Foundation
Founded by businessman and philanthropist John Ruan, Sr. to carry forward Dr. Norman Borlaug’s vision, the World Food Prize Foundation has made Des Moines a hub for global dialogue on food security. Through its programs, the Foundation honors outstanding achievements, engages world leaders, inspires students, and advances the fight against hunger worldwide. Hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation, the Summer Gala celebrates global efforts to battle food insecurity and advance agricultural innovation. More than an elegant evening, the event also serves as a key fundraiser supporting the Foundation’s work of funding youth education programs, international engagements, and the ongoing preservation and programming of the historic Hall of Laureates. Guests arrived in style, greeted by a literal red carpet that led them into the Grand Rotunda of the historic Hall of Laureates. This set the stage for an evening of sophistication and spirit.
The night continued with a lively cocktail reception featuring complimentary appetizers, as attendees mingled and enjoyed live music by Donald Gee and the NOLA Jazz Band. Soulful jazz and upbeat melodies filled the hall, creating a warm and inviting tone for this dazzling Summer Gala.

DJ Marty McFly set the tone for the later hours, filling the Hall of Laureates with high-energy music that drew guests to the floor. Our LED-lit DJ booth and signature illuminated dance floor transformed the historic space with a modern glow, becoming the centerpiece of the celebration. With every beat, this Gala shifted into an unforgettable party, giving guests the perfect place to dance and create lasting memories with friends old and new.
